WINNIPEG - Legendary Mustangs football player and coach Frank Cosentino is set to add another honour to his resume, as he will be inducted into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame later this year.
Cosentino will be inducted into the Hall of Fame in the Builders category on September 14th at a reception at Tim Hortons Field in Hamilton. Other members of the Class of 2018 include Paul Brûlé in the amateur player category, while Scott Flory, Barron Miles, Tom Hugo, Hank Ilesic, and Brent Johnson will all be honoured for their success in the professional football ranks.
A former player and coach with the purple and white, Cosentino suited up at quarterback for the Mustangs and helped the team with the Yates Cup in 1957 and 1959, as well as leading the team to the 1959 Canadian intercollegiate championship.
He was drafted first overall by the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in the 1950 CFL draft, and played for 10 seasons in the league, helping the Ticats to five straight Grey Cup appearances, including championship wins in 1963 and 1965.
Once his playing days were done, Cosentino returned to Western and served as head coach of the Mustangs for five seasons, posting a 36-13-2 record and a .725 winning percentage. He led the team to a pair of Yates Cup and Vanier Cup titles, taking both the Ontario and Canadian titles in 1970 and again in 1974.Â
Following his time at Western Cosentino went on to coach the York Lions, taking a team that had gone winless in two years and recording three consecutive seasons with .500 or better records, and eventually leading the program to the playoffs in both 1984 and 1985.Â
Along with his coaching success, Cosentino served as the chair and director of the Department of Physical Education and Athletics at York from 1976-97, and also authored 17 books on the history of sports in Canada.Â
Already a member of the Western Mustangs Sports Hall of Fame, Cosentino will be officially inducted into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame on September 14 at Tim Hortons Field. Members of this year's induction class will also be honoured the following day during the Hall of Fame Game between the Ticats and visiting Calgary Stampeders.Â
