Mustangs Football honours 2018 Wall of Champions Inductees

LONDON, Ont. – The Mustangs Football Champions Club honoured the newest members of the Wall of Champions during a ceremony held at TD Stadium on Friday afternoon.
 
This year saw five inductions to the Wall of Champions, with Angus McLachlin, Joe Fabiani, Chris Curran, Chris Marcus, and Randy McAuley.
 
Family and friends were on hand as this year's class of inductees removed Mustangs jerseys emblazoned with their former number to unveil their plaque on the Wall of Champions outside the Labatt Lounge at TD Stadium.
 
The inductees will be further honoured on Friday evening at the annual Wall of Champions Dinner, which will take place at the London Convention Centre.

2018 Wall of Champions Inductees
 
Angus McLachlin, MD'32 MSc'33 (Inducted Posthumously)
 
Born in St. Thomas, Dr. Angus D. McLachlin was the captain of the Mustang football team during his time as a student at Western, and is said to have played every minute of every game while he attended.
 
McLachlin was a Rhodes Scholar and an officer commanding the Number 10 Canadian Field Surgical Unit in northwestern Europe during World War II. Serving as the chair of the Department of Surgery for nearly 30 years, he was known for being a craftsman in the technical aspects of surgery and a strong educator. He passed on his skill and dedication to three decades of surgeons, many of whom continue to practice across Southwestern Ontario.
 
He also is credited for establishing the sub-surgical approach to residency at Western University, a method of teaching that earned him the utmost respect from all of his residents. The Angus D. McLachlin Professorship was established in 1991 through the generous support of former trainees and colleagues—in honour of Dr. McLachlin's dedication and contributions as an esteemed teacher and clinician.
 
Joe Fabiani, BA'73 (Inducted Posthumously)
 
Joe Fabiani was born on April 29, 1950, in Gimigliano, Italy, before his parents immigrated to Canada in 1952 to settle in Port Colborne, Ontario. He graduated from PCHS and continued his post-secondary education at the University of Western Ontario, where he obtained his Honours BA in Physical Education and a teaching degree.
 
As a talented athlete in several sports that included baseball, basketball, track and field, Fabiani's real love was football. Scouted by several universities in both Canada and the USA, Fabiani ultimately chose Western with his academic career in mind. He was quarterback for the Mustangs, and was drafted in his graduating year into the Canadian Football League by the BC Lions.
 
An injury early into the season ended his professional football career, but Fabiani turned to pursue his other passion as an educator. 
 
Chris Curran,BA'80
 
Chris Curran played as a defensive back for the Mustangs between 1976 and 1980. Curran was known as a stand out member of the purple and whites defensive unit, taking on some of the toughest matchups and proving to be a force on the field.
 
He was a part of two Vanier Cup winning teams in both 1976 and 1977. In his time at Western, Curran was named a Western Division All-Star, and received the prestigious Purple Blanket in his last year in 1980.
 
Chris Marcus HBA'81 BEd'86
 
Chris Marcus has a long history with the Mustangs Football program, as both a player and coach. The Ottawa, Ont., native suited up for the purple and white from 1978-81 as a defensive back. A graduate from the Ivey Business School, Marcus played with the Canadian Football League's Ottawa Rough Riders before returning to pursue a degree in education.
 
Marcus has had several stints with the Mustangs is a coaching capacity; first serving as the Defensive Backs coach from 1985-89, and Linebacker coach from 1990-96, and then Special Teams Coordinator from 2002-07. After a brief break, Marcus returned to this role and has also served as the team's Recruiting Coordinator, as he continues to act as a great mentor for student athletes.
 
Formerly a teacher a London South Collegiate Institute, he helped coach the Lions to a City Championship as one of the best teams in the province. Marcus has continuously guided students to success both in the classroom and on the field, acting as a great mentor in every capacity.
 
Randy McAuley,BA'08 BHSc'12 JD'15
 
Randy McAuley was born and raised in London, Ont., attending Catholic Central High School before starting his post-secondary run at Western. He was recruited to Penn State, but ultimately chose Western for its academic prowess.
 
McAuley was an all-star running back during his Mustangs career, at one point placing fifth on the Mustangs' all-time rushing list and being named an OUA Second Team All-Star. The running back was also a standout member of the Western Track and Field team where he won a gold medal in the 60m and a Bronze medal in the 300m at the 2004 CIS Track & Field Championships.
 
McAuley was awarded the CIS Community Involvement Award, and at Western the prestigious Dr. Claude Brown Memorial Award and a Purple Blanket to cap off an incredibly successful career as a Mustang.
 
He's also earned accolades off the field, as he enjoyed a career as a musician performing with the Juno nominated vocal quartet, The McAuley Boys.
