Victoria, BC - The Mustangs won three gold medals, two silver and three bronze at the Canadian University Rowing Championships at the Elk Lake Park in Victoria, BC.

The Mustang gold medals came in the Men's Pairs, Lightweight Men's 4 and Women's 8. They won silver in the Men's 8+ and Lightweight Men's Pairs. Bronze was picked up  by the Women's Pairs, Lightweight women's 4 and Lightweight womens 1.

Western men's team finished 2nd to UBC in overall points and the women's side finished 3rd behind UBC and UVic respectively.

"Although we weren't able to win enough categories to claim the overall championship, all of our crews can be very proud of their performances." said Women's team Head Coach Matt Waddell "This year we made strong strides forward from our fourth place finish (and only one medal) in 2018. We finished with four medals in total, including one gold in the heavyweight women's 8+. Our team will be returning most members next season, so there's a strong base to build on as we attempt another national championship run,"

Curtis Ames was named Male Athlete of the Year at the event. He won medals in heavyweight men's 8 and heavyweight men's pair.

Heavyweight women's coach Bob Ward was named women's coach of the year. "Bob has been an institution at Western for over thirty-five years. He has guided generations of women to great performances. He has a genuine care for the personal growth of the athletes he works with, and was awarded the Fran Eberhard Assistant Coach award at Western earlier in 2019." said Waddell "This year's the women's eight formed a tight bond under Bob's guidance and broke through for a national championship win in that category for the first time in nine years. I'm glad he was recognized for his knowledge and compassion by his fellow coaches."
