Mustangs fall to Badgers in tough loss

2/10/2019 8:31:00 PM

Box Score ST. CATHARINES, Ont - Maddy Horst served as a floor general with an all-around performance, but it wasn't enough as the Brock Badgers took away the 66-37 win on Saturday evening.

Fourth-year guard Maddy Horst led the Mustangs with her monster stat line, recording 9 points, 7 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals. Laura Graham was also a major contributor, leading the team with 12 points alongside 6 rebounds and 3 assists.

Kristan Gallant was the go-to option for the Badgers, scoring a game-high 18 points. She was accompanied by teammates Baelie Campbell and Melissa Tatti in spurring the offence, who scored 12 and 10 points, respectively.

Brock immediately established themselves as an offensive presence early, with a 13-0 run helping them create a comfortable gap in the first quarter. Western's downfall was on the boards, as the Badgers nearly doubled their rebounds and gave themselves several second-chance opportunities. Despite this, Graham was able to get to her spots in an attempt to get the offence going, scoring half the buckets for the purple and white. However, the rest of the team struggled to get their shooting going, and Western trailed at 12-20 at the end of the first quarter.

Similar to the first frame, the Mustangs were unable to settle into a consistent offensive rhythm. Fatigue became significantly more evident as Western turned the ball over several times due to lazy passing, and this only magnified the previous shooting struggles. Brock took this opportunity to attack even more aggressively, grabbing offensive rebounds and expanding their lead to 36-18 at the end of the half.

With the large lead the Badgers had cemented early on, the team had breathing room to keep the Mustangs at bay. Shooting troubles continued to plague the Western players, and exhaustion prevented any run from playing out into something major. With the gap too large to close, the Mustangs fell in a 66-37 loss.

With the loss, the Mustangs' record is updated to 5-17 on the year, as them remain in eighth place in the OUA West division standings. The Badgers are able to improve their record to breakeven at 11-11 and continue to hold their position of fourth in the OUA West.

The Mustangs will be back in action, where they will return home on this Sunday to take on the Windsor Lancers in Alumni Hall. The game is scheduled to tip off at 3:00 P.M. EST and fans can catch all the action live on OUA.tv.
