NIAGARA ON THE LAKE, Ont. – The Mustangs were in the Niagara region this past weekend to take the courts for the 2019 OUA Squash Championships. The men's team continue their reign in OUA squash, winning their 36th straight championship at the 2019 festivities. The Western women claimed second place, falling to five time provincial champions the Queen's Gaels.
Know going on for almost four decades, Western dominated on the men's side with wins in all six of their matches, ultimately ending the weekend with a 41-1 result. The Waterloo Warriors were able to squeeze a match out against the Mustangs on Sunday morning, but that was the lone blemish on an otherwise spotless weekend for the purple and white.
The Queen's Gaels men's team went 5-1 on the weekend with a 26-16 record to claim silver, just ahead of the bronze medalists from Toronto, who also went 26-16 – like their female counterparts – to win four of their fixtures across the three-day event. Rounding out the group with the same outcome as the women's draw were Brock in fourth place, followed by Waterloo, McMaster, and Guelph.
Leading the Mustangs to their 45th overall banner was the undefeated David Mill. The third year student from Windsor who also named a 2019 OUA all-star, his third of his career. Fellow Mustang and first-year player Elliott Hunt earned the Rookie of the Year award, joining the league after an excellent junior career. The weekend's MVP was University of Toronto's Josh Hollings, who went undefeated all season until his final match against Mill.
On the women's side, the Mustangs claimed silver with a 30-12 record – bettering their bronze medal result from last year. The purple and white were lead by second year Amy Commisso, who claimed her second OUA All-star nod of her career after the weekend. The path to gold was only thwarted by the Gaels, who only dropped a singular game all weekend.
Behind the Mustangs were the Toronto Varsity Blues in third, followed by host team Brock in fourth place, followed by Waterloo, McMaster, and Guelph.
Adding to an already successful weekend for the Mustangs, men's coach Derek Moore and women's coach Holly Delavigne both took home their respective Coach of the Year awards.
