LONDON, Ont. - Following a pair of disappointing losses this past weekend against Brock and Windsor, the Western women's basketball team will be back on the road this Wednesday to take on the Waterloo Warriors before returning home against the McMaster Marauders to close out the season.
The Mustangs continued to suffer the challenges of playing with an injury-ridden roster this past weekend, with no favours coming by the way of an altered schedule. Due to a cancellation, Wednesday's matchup against the Lancers was moved to Sunday, forcing the Mustangs to play in a rare back-to-back where they played in St. Catharine's on Saturday before travelling home for another game the following night.
Both games proved to be a challenge for a Western roster lined with rookie prospects, as matching up against a pair of veteran playoff teams in Brock and Windsor left the purple and white suffering two decisive losses to close out the weekend.
Following the weekend, the Mustangs now hold a 5-17 record and sit in eighth place in the OUA West division standings, as they sit outside the playoff picture towards the end of the regular season.
This week, the Mustangs will be hoping to turn their luck around with a pair of games to close out their season.
This Wednesday will see Western travel to Waterloo to take on a Warriors team which has also struggled to this point in the year, as they hold an identical 5-17 record with two games remaining on the schedule.
The Mustangs had the upper hand in the first meeting between these two teams, as they held off a late-game comeback from the Warriors to walk away with a 64-58 victory earlier this season. Although Western totalled a number of impressive stats on the night, perhaps their most meaningful was their ability to win with just eight players available for the game.
This Wednesday, Western will be forced to have a similarly inspiring performance, as they'll once again be shorthanded due to a slew of injured across the roster. However, if the purple and white are able to hold the Warriors to 31.8 FG% and 6.7 3PT%, as they did in their previous matchup, they could very well find themselves redeeming this past weekend with a victory.
However, the Mustangs' final game of the regular season will undoubtedly prove to be a much tougher test for the purple and white, as they'll find themselves matching up against the OUA West-leading McMaster Marauders in Alumni Hall.
McMaster currently holds a dominant 19-3 record on the season and has proven year after year to boast one of the most prolific women's basketball programs in the country.
The Marauders, who walked away with a 65-41 victory over the Mustangs in their first meeting this season, have been nothing short of dominant on the offensive end of the floor throughout the season. Scoring 78.0 points per game on an average of 18.6 assists and just 14.7 turnovers per game, McMaster's approach has been a potent combination of unselfishness and efficiency. Paired with a defence that consistently holds opponents below 60 points, the Marauders will prove to be a challenge to the young Mustangs on Senior Night. However, as coaches and players have stated all year long, this has been a season defined by young player development and there's perhaps no better way to end a season of development with a test against the best the province has to offer.
Both games are scheduled to tip off at 6:00 P.M. EST and fans can catch all the action live on OUA.tv.
