Mustangs look to get back to winning ways against Lancers and Badgers

LONDON, Ont. - After starting off the new year on a high note with four straight wins, the Western women's basketball team will be looking to get back on track this week following a pair of losses to the Laurier Golden Hawks and McMaster Marauders. The losses marked the third and fourth games of a four-game skid for the purple and white, as they look to get back to their winning ways with a pair of rematches this week.

Western nearly snapped their losing streak this past Wednesday in Alumni Hall, as they controlled the first half against Laurier, but seemed to run out of gas in the final two quarters of play, succumbing to the Golden Hawks' comeback and falling 61-54 in the end. The following Saturday saw the Mustangs go up against one of the best in the OUA in the Marauders, where Western fell behind early in the first half and was unable to complete the comeback, ending the weekend with a 65-41 loss.

However, despite a 5-15 record on the season, the Mustangs will be hoping to climb back up the standings this Wednesday against a Lancer team currently sporting an impressive 14-6 record and a third-place position in the OUA West division.

Western and Windsor have already met once this season, where an injury-ridden Mustangs team fell 77-46 on the road early in the season. However, with the potential of returning players once again looming over the game, the purple and white could very well narrow that scoring gap with a bolstered starting lineup.

But regardless of the conditions, Wednesday's game will be a true test for Western's resolve against one of the most dependable offence's in the division. Windsor's assist-to-turnover ratio has consistently been one of the best in the OUA West, while their shooting percentages have been as impressive as always. As a program that stresses the development of outside shooters, putting a stop to a dynamic and versatile offence will be a challenge all night for the purple and white. However, with two of the most persistent perimeter defenders in the division in Laura Graham and Maddy Horst, Western could be well-equipped to deal with the barrage. However, Western's biggest challenge will be stringing together quality shots of their own, both against a solid Windsor team and a Brock defence that allows just 65.0 points per game.

Western put up just 57 points in a loss earlier this year to Brock, a common result as the Badgers boast one of the strongest perimeter defences in the OUA. Brock has allowed opponents to shoot just 24.7 3PT% and averaged an incredible 11.3 steals per game. Those turnovers numbers could prove dangerous against a young Western team which starts a number of rookies, a natural recipe for turnovers.

Scoring will undoubtedly be a challenge this week for such a young Western team, but if the purple and white are able to limit their opponents' point production like they were in their previous wins this year, the team could very well find themselves in a pair of competitive games.

Western's first matchup against the Lancers will take place in Alumni Hall on Wednesday evening, followed by a road trip to St. Catharine's to take on Brock. Both games are scheduled to tip off at 6:00 P.M. EST and fans can catch all the action live on OUA.tv.
