Toronto, ON & Montreal, QB - Both the men's & women's Mustangs tennis teams brought home silver from the Canadian University Tennis Championships.
The annual event takes place during the Roger's Cup with the women's tournament being played in Toronto, while the men's event is played in Montreal.
On the women's side, they advanced to the championship round when they beat Memorial University 7-0 in the opening round.
Western met the University of Alberta in the championship round, Alberta got off to a quick start by winning the doubles point with an 8-2 victory on court #1 and an 8-0 win on court #2. Court #3 was tied 5-5 with play suspended due to the doubles point already being secured by Alberta.
Alina Jurca gave Alberta a 2-0 lead with 6-1, 6-0 win over Maddy Benn at #5 singles. Katie Johnson added to Alberta's lead with a 6-2, 6-1 win at #3 singles over Angela Chen. With singles courts #2, 4 and 6 just beginning, Western's #1 singles player, Helen He, found herself battling to keep the fixture alive. She lost the first set 6-2 to Alberta's Tereza Simonova and would need to win her match or the team match would be complete. It would get interesting from here as He pulled out the second set 6-4 to force a third and deciding set.
While He and Simonova were battling it out on court 1, the remaining matches were getting underway and they were all very close. If He could pull out the win, the remaining matches could all go either way. Alberta's Simonova stepped it up in the third set and jumped out to a 5-1 lead. He would close the gap to 5-3 with a late run but Simonova played some tough tennis to break He's serve and win the Championship title for her team. The remaining matches continued with a shortened format and Western won each of those matches at #2, 4, and #6 singles.
On the men's side they too beat Memorial by a score of 5-0 to advance to the championship round on Sunday against the University of Montreal.
The match began with a hard-fought doubles point. Western's Andre Szilvassy and Matthew Oliver won at #1 doubles with an 8-4 win over Kamen Damov and Rached Rahini. Montreal would even the score with an 8-2 win over Mark Jensen/Ron Singer at #2. The doubles point would come down to a tie-breaker on court #3 where Montreal's Hugo Badina and Alexis Pinsonneault pulled out an 8-7 victory (8-6 in the tie-breaker).
Montreal struck first in singles with Kamen Damov's 6-3, 6-4 win over Andre Szilvassy on court #1. Western's Mark Jensen put Western on the score board with a 6-4, 7-5 win over Rached Rahini. Virgil Sammartin put the Montreal Carabins within one point of the win with his 5-7, 6-2, 6-2 win over Brent Moffat but Montreal finally sealed the deal when first-year player Solal Dia finished a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Western's Ron Singer. Courts 2 and 6 were not completed.
