LONDON, Ont. - The Mustangs fell to Laurier 19-11 Saturday night, marking both their second straight loss, and the mid-way point of the season.
The Mustangs started the contest with incredible defensive pressure. However, this didn't last too long, with the Goldenhawks opening up the scoring with the first try only 6 minutes into the game.
Despite this initial setback, the Mustangs were able to keep fighting, and overcame some fumbling and missed opportunities to score the next points of the game, bringing the score up to 7-3 in Laurier's favour to end the first half.
The second half of the game started strong; on-field tensions were high leading to some pretty intense play on both sides of the ball. "The intensity was there for sure, our defense was stellar, we've never been making so many consecutive tackles," commented Mikko Vorster, team captain. While he admits the "offense could've been a little bit better," it is clear that the team was "in it to win it" and the Mustangs' hunger to win is incredibly promising for the rest of their season.
When looking forward to the second half of this season, Vorster spoke of "a very difficult matchup next week" followed by "a more evenly matched team." Further stating that he believes they will be going into these games "guns blazing... bringing the physicality" and by the last game of the season "we'll have one hell of a contest".
When asked about how he thought the team played, Coach Ian McLeod stated, "they played really hard [and] maybe deserved a better fate tonight." McLeod, a relatively recent addition to the Mustang's coaching staff, wants to see further progress with this team throughout the remaining games this season. Despite only being with them for a limited time so far, he comments that "as long as we keep getting better every game, that's a win for us."
The Mustangs will be back in London, on Alumni Field against the Guelph Gryphons, on October 9th at 6 pm.
