tLONDON, ON – The Mustangs forced the Varsity Blues to return to Toronto scoreless after an impressive match Saturday afternoon.

Western continues to win at home with a dominating 69-point win over the University of Toronto at Alumni Field this weekend.

The Mustangs opened the scoring for the game, with their first try of the match coming just 7 minutes into the opening half. Almost immediately after scoring, Western regained possession of the ball and powered down the field to score again, upping their lead to 12-0 within the first ten minutes of play.

There were no signs of slowing down, with both teams continuing to build in intensity. "I think that we just came out hot and firing… just being able to dial in early into the game and starting Monday and even yesterday being able to come in ready was probably what got us up there early," said Mustang Will Matthews.

Still building on this impressive start, the Mustangs scored several times over the next ten minutes and maintained high-intensity levels while holding a consistent lead, bringing the score up to 32-0 with less than 15 minutes remaining in the first half of play.

"I think being up as much as we were early can definitely be like we're trying, but I think the idea that like no games over and just keep pushing through anything," said Matthews.

With three tries in the final ten minutes of play in the first half, the Mustangs closed out a powerful opening 40 minutes of the game well in the lead, at 52-0.

The second half of the game opened with a still scoreless Varsity Blues team maintaining deep pressure despite the deficit.

However, the Mustangs seemed to be slowly losing the same level of force and power that they held in the first half of the game, with Mustangs Head Coach Ian McLeod saying, "in the second half, credit to UofT, they never gave up, and they kept coming at us and made it tougher on us, and I think we sort of got a little lackluster."

The Mustangs certainly didn't give up their intensity, once again making several impressive scoring plays, including a remarkably fast dash from the mid-field right to the try line in one play, lifting the score to 64-0.

"I think we were looking to get a bonus point and to get a bonus point, you have to score four tries, so we accomplished that," said McLeod, "overall, it's tough to be too hard on them. It was a good win."

Despite opening the first 40 minutes of the game with consistent scoring plays, UofT was pouring all of their energy into slowing the Mustangs down. While Western was able to keep the Varsity Blues well off the scoreboard, the Mustangs themselves scored only three more times in the second half of the game, bringing the game's final score to 69-0.

The Mustangs' next and final home game of the regular season will be on Saturday, October 22, at 1 pm on Alumni Field.
