London, ON – The Mustangs closed out the regular season at home on Saturday afternoon against the University of Waterloo, claiming a 40-12 win.
Simon Ofiara and Joel Abdel Barr both had two tries in the win as the Mustangs finish the season with a 5-1 record and a four-game winning streak.
"They came together as a team. It's the first time I've seen us play as a unit of 50 and its really nice to see," said head coach Ian McLeod.
"It was a hard-fought win," added Colin Rolph. "We played worse than we should've, but I think we found ways and had moments of us being electric and it was a great time."
The purple and white got off to a strong start, as a powerful scrum led to the first try of the game scored by Colin Rolph, with Will Matthews completing the conversion for an early 7-0 lead.
The lead would be doubled 12 minutes in, as Connor Gibson powered down the field for his first try of the game.
The intensity continued into the second half, with the 'Stangs dominating possession. The Mustangs had several open runs throughout the half, making impressive gains on the field.
With Waterloo looking to get on the board and coming close to the try line, the purple and white were able to push them further out of the zone, showing their determination.
The first half ended with Simon Ofiara scoring his first try of the game, for a 19-0 halftime scoreline.
Joel Abdel Barr opened the second half scoring with a try for the Mustangs, before Ofiara nabbed another of his own to extend the lead to 33-0.
The visitors wouldn't be held off the scoresheet entirely however, as 18 minutes into the half they secured their first try of the game.
Both sides continued to fight hard, with Abdel Barr adding his second try of the day with 10 minutes remaining before Waterloo scored another to conclude the game. The final score was 40-12.
"I think I've had a huge step up from the last season," said Rolph on the conclusion of the regular season. "I think everyone is better, we are playing as a team. We've come together this year. We went from 1-3 last year to 5-1 this year and it's a huge change."
"I don't think we finished on our best game, we had an opportunity to make it really exciting with regards to standings and point differential," said McLeod. "We could've been better today. But good team's find a way to win even when they're not at their best."
The Mustangs now prepare for the playoffs, with details still to be decided.
"The last few weeks have been great for our moral," said Rolph. "We're on a four-game winning streak right now and feeling great. We think we are one of the better teams in the OUA and want to prove it."
"They guys have been very positive," concluded McLeod. "They've grown a lot since we started training camp and I'm really proud of their effort."
Stay tuned for playoff details.
