Waterloo, ON - The Mustangs are coming home with a second silver medal for the 2022 season after the OUA Provincial Championships in Waterloo.
The Mustangs started the event with a pair of games on Saturday starting with the uOttawa Gee-Gees in the first round robin game. The Mustangs beat Ottawa 6-3 with Hanneke Isert Bender pitching a perfect game into the 5 inning & Aimee Leduc finishing the game with a save.
Western would advance to take on Toronto in the round robin. Western would ride a complete game 1 hitter from Leduc and win 6-1, advancing to the winner's bracket final against Queens on Sunday.
The Mustangs would play a dominant game on Sunday morning, taking a 9-2 win over the Gaels to advance to the gold medal game.
In the gold medal game the Mustangs would again meet the Queens Gaels. It was a much tighter game, as the Mustangs scored two runs in the 4th inning. The Gaels would crack the scoreboard in the 5
th inning and then add another in the 6th inning to tie the game going into the 7
th. Queens would get a bloop single just out of the shortstop's reach to score the runner from third base in the bottom of the seventh for the walk off win.Â
The silver medal qualifies Western for the 2023 National Championship Tournament and the Mustangs finish the season with a record of 25 wins and 2 losses.
"I am extremely proud of them. They are a quality group of student-athletes who are among the hardest workers that we've ever had." said Head Coach Pete Lemon "They challenge each other regularly in an attempt to improve.  I know they will use this result as motivation to be even better into the future."
Prior to the tournament the Mustangs were recognized with several OUS awards. Abby Bush was named 2022 OUS West Division Top Hitter after a season that included a .636 average, .652 OBP, 12 RBIs & 12 runs scored. Aimee Leduc was named 2022 OUS West Division Top Pitcher, for the second year in a row. She had a 6-0 record with one save on the regular season which included 31 innings pitched, only 2 runs allowed & 30 Strikeouts. Leduc & Blythe Hilpert were also named OUA All-Stars.
