Mustangs lose 2-1 in overtime battle against Nipissing

North Bay, ON- Mustangs took on the Nipissing Lakers on the second game of their road trip this weekend. Despite getting on the board first, Mustangs couldn't hold on to the lead, and came up short, losing 2-1 in over time.

The Mustangs had a strong start in the first, coming out firing with some good chances early on. Western also had two powerplays in the first period, but were unable to capitalize on either. The game remained scoreless all through the first, and into the flood. The game was anyone's to take.

The second period saw lots of special teams play, with the Mustangs starting off the period killing off a 5-on-3. To keep the momentum going, after killing off both penalties, Western was awarded with a powerplay. Western wasn't able to capitalize.

12 minutes in, Hannah Irwin carried the puck into the Lakers zone and slid it to a lone Jenna MacLean for her to beat the goalie sliding across. MacLean's second of the year made it 1-0 Mustangs to get the first lead on the road. Mustangs were able to fend off the Lakers and keep the one goal lead going into the third.

The third period went against the Mustangs favor. Nipissing came out hard in an attempt to tie the game. 8 minutes into the third, they found success with Lakers' Desmerais scoring to make it 1-1. Despite each team getting a power play after the tying goal, neither were successful in converting to a goal, and regulation finished 1-1. The game would need overtime.

The Lakers came out strong, preventing Mustangs from getting any shots in overtime. Just a minute into overtime Lakers' Dominico was able to score off a successful offensive zone faceoff play. The game ended up 2-1 Nipissing, and the final shots were 21-14 in their favor.

Catch Western in action Friday November 4th to take on the Guelph Gryphons for the second time this season. Puck-drop is at 7pm at Thompson Arena.
