KINGSTON, ON - The Mustangs lost to the undefeated Queens Gaels on Saturday night, as the first weekend of their four-game road trip came to a close with a final score of 100-59.

It was a hard fought game for the Mustangs as they came up against the Gaels for the first time this season.

The Gaels are the last team in the division to have a perfect record on the season, so the Mustangs knew they had a tough run ahead of them.

The Mustangs were holding tight on defense and were playing much closer to their individual player instead of the 2-3 zone they held for most of last night's game against Ontario Tech.

The Gaels held Western under intense pressure, which had caused several turnovers and stoppages throughout the opening minutes of the game.

Western scored the opening points of the night, but Queens then proceeded to go on a 22-0 run over the proceeding several minutes of the quarter, before the Mustangs started to pull together again in the final minutes of the quarter.

As the opening quarter came to a close, the Mustangs had brought themselves back into the game, and in the final minute they went on a run to close out the quarter narrowly trailing, 25-14.

In the second quarter, the Mustangs reverted back to a 2-3 zone, helping them close out the Gaels, and keep them out of the paint as much as possible.

Despite Queens building their lead back up to 20 points, four minutes into the quarter, the Mustangs were still fighting just as hard to fight back against the aggressive play from the Gaels.

The Mustangs had caught up to the Gaels in terms of shot attempts, but the trouble was getting them to fall, as Western's field goal percentage sat around 22.6% in the final seconds of the half, and the Mustangs were down 50-28.

Similar to the previous two quarters, the Gaels came out the gate with incredible power, extending their lead to 28 points in the opening 2 minutes of the half.

Western were quick to fall back on defense, and force outside shots from Queens, but the Gaels were not missing many shots from around the arc, and with 6 minutes remaining in the quarter, the margin was extended to 33 points.

The Mustangs fought hard to continue putting up points, but they were not pulling down the rebounds that Queens were which allowed them to score 11 times more second chance points.

Emily Capretta had been putting up impressive numbers, scoring 12 points at this point of the game, and when the third quarter came to an end, the Mustangs were down 83-47.

In the final quarter, the Gaels were forcing rushed shots and passes from the Mustangs, as they maintained intense defensive pressure throughout the quarter.

Western was doing well crashing the boards and fighting for rebounds, as well as drawing fouls off the Gaels, allowing them extra chances at the free throw line, where the Mustangs had been consistently performing well all through the game.

The Mustangs switched back to a full court press on the final plays of the night, but ultimately fell to the Gaels 100-59.

The Mustangs will return to the court next weekend in an away game against the University of Toronto on Friday January 27th at 6 pm. Fans can tune in to watch the team live at OUA.tv.
