London, ON – The Mustangs started their weekend home stand with a 3-2 OT win over the Windsor Lancers on Saturday afternoon.
Haylie Kirkpatrick was the hero for the Mustangs, scoring the winning goal 3:13 into the extra frame.
"It's nice to get the first win of the weekend that's for sure," said Mustangs Interim Head Coach Rich Brown "I'm just hoping we can keep it going and maintain that strong effort towards another win tomorrow.
Both sides took some time to test each other with the Lancers getting the opening goal of the game with just over 4 minutes remaining in the opening period and held the 1-0 lead at the end of the period.
The Mustangs would finally crack the scoreboard late in the second period, Kennedy Ward would send the puck into neutral ice and on to the stick of Madeline DesRosiers who skated into the offensive zone who then slid the puck to Alyssa Wouda who slid the puck into the Windsor cage and evened the game at 1-1.
Windsor would score just over six and a half minutes into the 3
rd period to take a 2-1 lead, the Mustangs weren't going to roll over though. Kate Suitor skated the puck into the offensive zone and sent a gorgeous back handed saucer pass into the slot where Adeline Kristoff was wide open and buried the one-timer to even the game at 2-2 and that score would hold through the end of regulation.
In the extra frame, the Mustangs put pressure on the Lancers. Reese Whiteman held the puck down low in the Windsor zone and appeared to be held up but kept her feet moving and skated the puck behind the Lancer cage, sending the puck out front where Haylie Kirkpatrick picked up the pass and wired a wrist shot into the Windsor goal to secure the 3-2 win.
"I was totally gassed first of all, I saw Reese (Whiteman) come around with her head up and I saw the slot was open, Rich (Brown) was telling us to go there all night and I got the puck on my stick and the shot on the ice and it went it," said Kirkpatrick "This is my second OT winner of the year, I don't think i've ever had an OT winner in my career before so this is pretty big,"
The Mustangs weren't short of chances as they outshot the Lancers 42-31 on the night.
"We knew this was going to be a tough one for us as we have had some trouble putting the puck in the back of the net so far this year but it was nice to be rewarded tonight," said Mustangs Interim Head Coach Rich Brown "It was nice to see our players rebound tonight and come back twice tonight to win this game,"
The Mustangs are back on home ice Sunday afternoon (Nov. 12) for a 3:00pm puck drop as they face off against the Queen's Gaels. Get your tickets at WesternMustangs.ca/ticket, Western students get free admission with their WesternONECard.
