London, ON – The Mustangs celebrated 467 Scholar Athletes from the 2022-23 academic year at the Mustangs Honours Breakfast on Wednesday morning.

These students have attained an 80% academic average while representing the university on a varsity sport or varsity club team.

"Approximately 42% of our student athletes at Western achieved over an 80% average while competing on a varsity team last year." said Christine Stapleton, Western Director of Sports & Recreation "This is a growth of 9% from last year which we attribute to the amazing dedication of our student athletes to their academic as well as their athletic pursuits,"

Western is consistently ranked in the top two (2) of Canadian Universities for the number of Academic All-Canadians as we await the official rankings for the season from U SPORTS which is expected in the near future.

The top 3 faculties at Western for the number of scholars athletes include the Faculty of Social Science with 70  scholars student athletes at #3, the Faculty of Science with 71 scholars student athletes at #2 & the Faculty of Health Sciences with 99  scholars athletes with the #1 ranking this year.

"Our faculties, schools and affiliated university colleges are incredible partners with Sports & Recreation in the student athlete journey," said John Doerksen, Western Vice-Provost (Students) "I wanted to give special thanks to this group for all of their hard work and support for our student athletes."

Each student athlete receiving an Scholar Athlete award was called forward to receive their certificate at the event.
