Kitchener-Waterloo, ON - The Mustangs were crowned back-to-back provincial champions at the Provincial AA Championship this past weekend in Kitchener-Waterloo.

Western's Laura Soper led the tournament with 23 points, coming from 10 goals and 13 assists. Kayden Thornton followed in second with 8 goals and 10 assists for a total of 18 points. Sydney Dagenais rounded out the top five with 9 goals and 8 assists for 17 points.

The Mustangs kicked-off the tournament on Thursday with a game against Carleton, where they won 10-3. The first period saw Kayden Thornton, Grace Beggs, Olivia Birstonas, Kiana Fraser and Hailey Cornacchia get on the board for the 'Stangs, as they led 5-3 after the first.

It was all Western in the second period, as Ainsleigh Wedow, Sydney Dagenais, Kaela Snethun and Monica Perlotto added their names to the scoresheet. Thornton also notched her second of the game, putting Western up 10-3 after the second and securing the win. Kayden Thornton finished leading the Mustangs with 2 goals and 2 assists.

The purple and white then went 2-0 on Friday against McMaster and Brock.

In a mid-day match against the Marauders, Western scored seven goals in the opening period courtesy of two from Snethun and Fraser, alongside one from Cornacchia, Thornton and Beggs.

Thornton and Beggs each scored their second of the game in the second period, while Dagenais and Laura Soper rounded out the scoring en-route to an 11-0 victory. Soper finished the match with a team-leading 5 points, as she registered 4 assists alongside her goal.

The purple and white then took on the Badgers later in the day, winning 5-1.

It was a first-period affair in this one, as all goals came in the opening frame. It was Beggs, Dagenais and Fraser who got on the board for Western, with the latter two each registering a brace. Once again, Soper led the team with 3 points at the end of this one from her assists.

At 1pm on Saturday, the 'Stangs then took on Nipissing.

Soper had 7 points to her name in this one, with five goals and two assists. Dagenais and Thornton each had 2 goals and 2 assists in the match, while Fraser scored a goal of her own as Western won 10-2.

The lone loss of the weekend came later that day against Guelph.

The Gryphons led 3-2 after the first, with Western's goals coming from Thornton and Dagenais. Despite a goal from Mackenzie Kuntz in the second, Guelph scored three more to take the win 6-3.

Sunday opened with an early morning semi-final matchup for Western against the University of Ottawa.

Soper scored a hattrick in the win, while Thornton, Beggs, Snethun, Dagenais and Kuntz each registered a goal of their own as the 8-3 win booked the purple and white a ticket to the final against Brock.

It was the Badgers who got on the board first in the championship match, before Wedow tied things up 3 minutes later. Brock took the lead on a power play, but two goals in less than a minute for Western had them up 3-2 after the first.

While the Badgers tied things up to start the second, another goal from Wedow put Western back in front, in what proved to be the game winner. A goal from Snethun rounded out the scoring as the 'Stangs won 5-3 to secure the Gold Medal.

Congratulations to the Mustangs on another spectacular season!
