LONDON, ON -
On Saturday night, the Mustangs looked to extend their winning streak to four games against the Laurentian Voyageurs.
Laurentian came out strong, shooting 46% from the field in the first quarter, including 5 threes. They led by five points after the first quarter, 20-15. Jenna Button and Kailey Reimer led the Mustangs offense, which started out struggling.
Reimer continued to lead the charge for the Mustangs on both ends of the floor. At half time she pulled down 7 rebounds along with 13 points. Western's 3PT shooting struggled in the first half, going 3-19, while Laurentian went 7-17. The Mustangs defense kept them in the contest, out-rebounding the Voyageurs 23-13 and pulling ahead at halftime 33-29.
Paris Alexander came alive for the Mustangs in the third quarter, knocking down threes and driving to the basket. She finished the night with 16 points, including 4 threes. The Mustangs defense continued to stifle the Voyageurs offense, forcing turnovers and running the shot clock down. They extended their lead to 13, heading into the fourth quarter.
Laurentian clawed their way back into the game, chipping away at the deficit. They made it a 2-possession game with 35 seconds left, outscoring the Mustangs 19-12 in the quarter. Western held on and closed out the game 66-60, earning their fourth consecutive win.
"I think we stopped their runs quickly, which is something that we've been trying to work towards, not letting their runs have a snowball effect on how we're playing, both offensively and defensively, so just communicating and playing our game is how we work", said Jenna Button. She finished the night with 16 points, including 3 threes and 5 rebounds.
The Mustangs are back in action on Wednesday, November 27th at 6PM against the Brock Badgers at Alumni Hall.
