Pickering, ON - Three Mustangs were named OUA All-Stars at the 2024 OUA Badminton Championship.
Tiffany Too, Katy Wong, and Noah Xu were all recognized among the best in Ontario after the Mustangs had a hard fought weekend of competition which included them making the bronze medal match.
Western started the weekend with a split on the opening day, a 6-4 win over McMaster followed by a 6-4 loss to York.
On day two the Mustangs had a pair of wins including a 10-0 win over Guelph and a 6-3 win over Ottawa.
"We came into the tournament expecting strong competitors, and that is exactly what happened." said Co-Head Coach Tiffany Too "This definitely speaks to the quality of the competition in the OUA because all teams had very strong athletes,"
Western found themselves in a semi-final battle against Waterloo which they ended up on the losing end 6-2.
"During our semi-finals against Waterloo, we expected tough competition as we faced them last year in the semifinals as well." said Too "We started off strong with Noah in men's singles having a 90-minute match against Kevin Wang, who ended up winning the OUA MVP award this year. However, Noah was two points away from winning the match."
With the loss to Waterloo, Western was into the bronze medal match against York.
"During our bronze medal tie against York, we also expected tough competition because we lost to them 4-6 in the group stage. We started off strong leading 4-2, winning our women's doubles 1, men's doubles 1, men's singles 1, and mixed doubles 2, but unfortunately fell short towards the end losing the tie 6-4."
The Mustangs finish 4th for the season but are feeling positive about the future.
"Katy Wong is a rookie on our team who won multiple upsets against top veterans from other universities." said Too "During our first group stage tie against McMaster, Katy won her singles match against Jeslyn Chow. Katy also won her doubles match with Tiffany against Giselle Chan and Sharon Au from York University during the bronze medal tie."
