Toronto, ON - The Mustang Wrestling team delivered a strong performance this past Saturday at York University, competing in the annual York Open. The women's team led the charge, finishing second in the team standings and helping the Mustangs secure third place overall in the combined team rankings.
Second-year standout Cyenna Trotman continued her dominant run, claiming gold in the 50 kg division. Coming off a gold medal performance at the McMaster Invitational, Trotman was flawless once again, going 4-0 on the day. She won each match by technical superiority, scoring a staggering 45 points while conceding only 2.
"Cyenna had a strong tournament, winning her second gold in as many weekends," said head coach Scott Proctor. "She's been consistent and aggressive, and it's great to see her hard work pay off."
The women's team collected four medals in total. Graduate students Jonelle Clarke and Jennifer Nwamadi each earned silver, marking their second consecutive podium finishes after winning gold and bronze respectively the previous weekend. Clarke is currently pursuing her Master's in Biochemistry, while Nwamadi is in her first year of medical school.
"My goal this season is to refine and sharpen my skills while remembering to enjoy the process," Clarke shared after her matches. "It's been rewarding to see how I've grown and succeeded as an athlete, and since 1st year me always believed that I could get here, I could never let her down."
Myah Kyle added a bronze in the 72 kg weight class, also her second medal in as many weekends. Additional top-six finishes came from Bahar Zali, Chanelle Median, and Yukta Joshi, who each placed fourth, and Elizabeth Paguirigan, who finished fifth.
On the men's side, three Mustangs placed in the top six. Zachary Ortencio took fourth in the 68 kg division, while Leo Kitambla and Luca Roma earned fifth-place finishes in the 57 kg and 90 kg categories, respectively.
"Overall it was a good tournament for our athletes," Proctor noted. "It was good for them to get more matches in—especially for those competing for the first time this season. We'll continue to train hard and look to improve."
Next up for the Mustangs is the Pat Bolger Memorial Tournament, hosted by TMU on Sunday, November 16th.
