London, ON - With only a week to go before the 2025 OUA Track & Field Championship, some members of the Mustangs roster were getting final preparations in, while others were hoping to book their spot in the upcoming provincial and national championships.
The Mustangs were split up amongst three different meets, The University of Toronto Hal Brown Meet, Boston University David Hemery Valentine Invitational and The Guelph Last Chance Meet.
The weekend produced; two school records, three U SPORTS Automatic Qualifiers, numerous personal bests, season's bests and Mustangs moving onto the highly competitive OUA team.
Highlights from Toronto included in the men's 60mH Markus Grant ran personal bests in the heats and finals of 8.28 to win the event and move to 10th in the country. In the women's hurdles Findlay Weir ran a personal best in the heats of 8.91 to take the win. In women's high jump Michele Horak placing 2nd 1.60m in a seasons best and Ava Neuman 4th in 1.55m also a seasons best. EJ Boston won the mile in personal best of 5:04.29.
Highlights from Guelph include Phoebe Skipp winning the pole vault in a personal best of 3.85m to move to 5th in the country. Western horizontal jumpers swept the Guelph last chance meet with a slew of great performances led by Charlie Ostapowich who won the women's long jump with a personal best jump of 5.80m. This was followed up by Christie Collins and Rofi Agboola who both had seasons best jumps of 5.77m and 5.62m respectively. On the men's side, Shaheer Hussain was third in the men's long jump with a jump of 6.63m and Theo Russell also placed third with a leap of 13.13m in the men's triple jump. The throwers had a huge weekend. Men's weight started off our Saturday in Guelph with Alvi Kasmi throwing a huge PB of 14.25m and Marcus Robinson throwing a new PB of 12.71m. In women's weight throw, Anij Sparenberg threw a massive PB of 14.11m for fifth, Rhinnah Badom threw a PB of 13.64m for eighth and Davyne Gibbard-Buehler threw a PB of 12.60m. In men's shot put, Seth Edwards threw a best of 16.72m to secure the first place position. Austin Riha threw a new PB of 13.99m for fifth place and Sam Morrow finished eighth with a PB of 13.95m. Nic Soltys threw a PB of 12.70m to wrap up the men's competition. In women's shot, Anij took the gold with another huge PB of 12.09m and Rhinnah threw 11.08m for fourth place. Davyne wrapped up our weekend in Guelph with a new personal best of 9.96m.
On the Guelph track the 600m saw a hot race with Alex Warren taking 2nd place in a personal best time of 1:20.33 moving him to 6th in the OUA. Vincent Moore and Dylen Belanger battle to 4th with the exact same time of 1:21.99 and personal bests for both. Clara Fava won the 1500m in a personal best of 4:42.27. Owen Parkes was 3rd in the 1500m with a season's best time of 4:05.91.
As usual in Boston the performances did not disappoint. Hallee Knelsen won the highly contested 1000m at the Boston University David Hemery Valentine Invitational in a Western Record time of 2:43.13 to take the number one spot in U SPORTS. Ben Fox placed 4th in the 1000m with a time of 2:21.50 surpassing his school record by 2.3 seconds. This moves Ben to number one in OUA and 3rd in U SPORTS. Two athletes from the LD group ran themselves into 1st place in the U SPORTS rankings (Chloe coutts: 4:39.22 mile PB + AQ, and Sophie Coutts: 9:10.40 3000m PB + AQ), while nearly everyone else accomplished a seasons best performance!
