London, ON - The Mustangs Field Hockey team kicked off the season this weekend on home turf.
The weekend started on Saturday with a 4-0 win over McGill. The Mustangs controlled the game from start to finish, showcasing both their offensive and defensive skills to secure the win.Â
Western came out of the gate strong, establishing field possession early in the game and setting the tone for the rest of the match.
The Mustangs showed strong teamwork on the field and capitalized on all their chances in the defensive circle. Goalies Emma Leclerc and Mackenzie Gladman stood strong, picking a shutout for the Mustangs, while Tasha Stanford scored twice with Charlotte Craig, Jasalyn Jolly each adding goals in the win.
The second game of the weekend came on Sunday morning against tough competition from York.
The Lions played hard from the opening whistle. Goalkeeper Mackenzie Gladman kept her composure in the net, making numerous saves. The Mustangs were able to generate some offence, having a few offensive corner opportunities, but weren't able to convert on those chances.
Western came up short, posting a 6-0 loss; however, they walked away from the game and the weekend as a whole with a lot of important lessons to take forward into the rest of the season.
Western is on the road next weekend for a pair of game, starting Saturday afternoon against Queen's and then a Sunday afternoon match up against Toronto.
