London, ON - The Western Mustangs Athletes of the Week for the week ending March 8 are Liv Sands & Jackson MacKay of the Track & Field team.
MacKay won gold in the heptathlon at the 2026 U SPORTS Track & Field Championship this weekend with a U SPORTS record 5607 points. Not only did he win the overall event, he also set new U SPORTS records in hept hurdles (8.04s) and hept high jump (2.02m) in the process. MacKay also placed 5th in open hurdles and 7th in open pole vault, helping the men claim the national team title.
Sands won her third consecutive gold medal in Women's Shot Put. She also set a new U SPORTS record at 17.67m, a record previously held by Olympian Brittany Crew . Sands also took a silver medal from the Women's Weight Throw at the U SPORTS Championship.
