LONDON, Ont, Alumni Field – Kennedy Johnstone powered the Western Mustangs with six tries and five conversions as Western delivered a dominant 84-0 victory over the York Lions Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field, earning its first home win of the season.

Western wasted little time establishing control. Johnstone opened the scoring with a try before converting to give the Mustangs an early 7-0 advantage. She soon found the try line again for her second of the afternoon. Although the ensuing conversion was unsuccessful, Western continued to apply pressure and keep York pinned in its own end.

The Mustangs continued to attack at pace, adding another try before Johnstone connected on the conversion. Mikayla Hough then broke through the York defence with a strong run as Western continued to create opportunities through its movement and continuity.

By the 20-minute mark, the Mustangs had already put 29 points on the board, scoring at a pace of more than a point per minute.

Johnstone remained at the centre of Western's attack, completing her hat trick before adding her fourth try later in the opening half. She followed with another successful conversion as the Mustangs carried a commanding 41-0 advantage into halftime.

The dominant start came after Western spent the week emphasizing its ability to maintain continuity while playing at a higher tempo.

"We had a lot of work this week on our level of continuity and making sure that we can play at a fast pace and play within our structure," said Western's head coach.

Western returned from the break with no intention of slowing down. Johnstone crossed the try line again to open the second-half scoring, giving her five tries on the afternoon.

Less than a minute later, Western was back on the attack. Hough helped create another opening before Johnstone crossed the line for her sixth try, continuing an outstanding individual performance while pushing the Mustangs past the 50-point mark.

Johnstone finished the afternoon with 40 points from six tries and five conversions, but credited Western's collective effort for creating the opportunities she was able to capitalize on.

"We work face to face, punching it in the middle and then opening up opportunities, and I just happened to be there," said Johnstone.

Western continued to find success throughout its lineup as the second half progressed. Mackenzie Curran and Ketrina Wright were among the Mustangs to cross the try line, while Hough continued to make an impact in the attack and finished the match with two tries.

Annie Boryczko also recorded a try as Western continued to control possession and territory. The Mustangs were later awarded a penalty try following an illegal tackle on Johnstone during another scoring opportunity, adding seven points as the lead continued to grow.

Despite the widening margin, Western's focus remained on maintaining its structure and playing collectively rather than allowing the score to dictate its approach.

"The key for us is playing for the we and not for the me," said Western's head coach. "It's easy in high-scoring games to start trying to score your own points, but we stay in a team structure and don't change anything. Don't change what got you to where you are."

Bryan Heather capped off the afternoon with another Western try near the 80-minute mark as the Mustangs reached 84 points.

Western's performance was just as complete defensively. The Mustangs kept York off the scoreboard for the entire 80 minutes, complementing their relentless attack with a shutout at the other end of the field.

For Johnstone, the Mustangs' ability to maintain their approach regardless of the score was an important part of the performance.

"At the end of the day, we just have to focus on playing our game and playing for one another and emphasize that it's not individual efforts out there, regardless of the score," said Johnstone. "These games are good opportunities to keep building on what we've been working on throughout the season so far."

Western walked off Alumni Field with its first home victory of the season after combining a high-tempo attack, contributions throughout the lineup and an 80-minute defensive shutout in the 84-0 win.
