LONDON, Ont. -
Laura Russell (Bolton, Ont.) scored a second-half try converted by
Martha Goodrow (Aurora, Ont.) to give Western's women's rugby team life and pull within eight points, but Brittany Benn (Napanee, Ont.) stole the show and responded immediately with one of her three tries for Guelph in a 20-7 win over Western on Oct. 9 at St. Georges Society Rugby Fields.
Jacey Murphy (Alliston, Ont.) contributed a fourth try for the Gryphons.
Western (3-2, No. 8 in CIS) will travel to face the Waterloo Warriors in the OUA quarter-finals on Oct. 17.
Guelph (5-0, No. 3 in CIS) finishes in first place in the OUA and will have home-field advantage throughout the playoffs.
The Mustangs controlled the play in the second half but Benn's speed and agile feet contributed to all four scores, including the set up for Murphy's try in the highly anticipated rematch of the 2008 OUA Championship.
Guelph and McMaster finished in first place in their respective divisions. Guelph will host one OUA quarter-final against the Brock Badgers, while the Marauders will host the Toronto Varsity Blues (1-4).
In other OUA quarter-finals, the Queen's Gaels will host the Trent Excalibur, while the Warriors (3-2) host Western on Oct. 17. The Warriors defeated Western earlier in the season 25-19 to win the second-place tiebreaker in the Shiels Division and the right to host the quarter-final game.
