Toronto, ON – After a tough loss to the York Lions on Friday October 9, the Western Mustangs bounced back hard to win two and tie one over the weekend. On Saturday the Mustangs easily defeated McGill and managed to get a tie against the Guelph Gryphons who are currently undefeated and ranked first in the OUA. On Sunday, the Mustangs came out hard once again and defeated Carleton for the second time this season. Western is now sitting in fourth spot and is steadily climbing in the standings. With one more weekend of OUA league play, the Mustangs hope to finish in the top 3.
Western played a solid match against McGill on Saturday afternoon defeating them 3-0. The Mustangs controlled the majority of the game and gave McGill very little offensive chances. CIS All Star Michelle Weber (Ilderton, ON) scored two goals and rookie forward Anne Wozney (Calgary, AB) scored one.
Later in the afternoon was Western’s tougher match against Guelph. The Mustangs had been preparing for this matchup all week and were mentally and physically prepared to contain Guelph’s offensive force consisting of forward Brienne Stairs who is currently leading the OUA with 26 goals and National Team member Kristine Wishart. The Mustangs played a very tight defensive game and were able to frustrate the Gryphons and contain their strong offense. The Gryphons scored two early goals but the Mustangs stayed strong and answered back with two goals late in the second half. Constant tenacity from the entire team allowed Elsbeth Tate (Richmond, BC) and Louise Radford (Guelph, ON) to score one goal leaving the final score as 2-2.
On Sunday, the Mustangs came out hard once again defeating Carleton 2-0. Western controlled most of the play, with first year goalie Julia DeGravio (Waterloo, ON) making some key saves and eliminating Carleton’s penalty corner chances. Elsbeth Tate (Richmond, BC) scored early in the first half and Kirsten Jewell (Toronto, ON) scored off a short corner in the second half to give the Mustangs the win.
Tonight under the lights at TD Waterhouse Stadium, the Mustangs will face Guelph once again in what is anticipated to be a very close match up. The Mustangs have recovered well from their 3 game weekend and is looking to come out hard again tonight. The game begins at 7pm tonight.
