Waterloo, ON - The Western Mustangs added another win to their record on Saturday October 24th, improving to 7-3-2. Western dominated the game, limiting McGill to a few shots and only one penalty corner. Gillian Cummings played well in net and earned the shutout for the Mustangs.
The team came out hard right from the beginning and had lots of shots on net and many short corner opportunities but it wasn’t until half way through the first half that Michelle Weber (Ilderton, ON) netted one from the top of the circle off a breakaway pass from midfielder Petra Kovacs (Strathroy, ON). Minutes later on a short corner Sarah Cobourn shot the ball far post where Louise Radford tipped it into the top right corner.
Going into the second half, the Mustangs had a solid 2-0 lead but didn’t stop there. Early in the second half, rookie defender Katie Feagan (Goderich, ON) dribbled into the top of the circle and hammered the ball into the net. Throughout the rest of the second half, Western continued to dominate play allowing Weber (Ilderton, ON), Maddy Wooton (Platsville, ON) and Elsbeth Tate (Richmond, BC) to each score easy goals.
Head Coach Jeff Pacheco was very pleased with how the team played. He said, “The girls managed the game well and we used our speed to break down the McGill defence. It was a solid team win."
On Sunday the Mustangs played two games against Toronto and Queen’s. They only needed one more win to move up to third place which is where they had hoped to finish in the overall OUA standings.
