Kingston, ON - It was another successful weekend of OUA league play as the Western Mustangs Field Hockey team travelled to Kingston, Ontario to play Toronto, Waterloo and York. The team came out undefeated, tying Toronto and beating both Waterloo and York. They improved their record to 4-1-1.
On Saturday, Western tied Toronto 2-2. It was a very defensive match but the Mustangs were able to answer back with a goal each time the Blues scored. The team played solid all around the field including some key saves from rookie goalie Gillian Cummings (Toronto, ON). Sarah Cobourn (Mississauga, ON) and Madeleine Wootton (Platsville, ON) scored one goal each.
On Sunday morning the Mustangs came out hard against York and dominated most of the game. The York goaltender and CIS All Star, Brittany Blount made some strong saves, holding the Mustangs to only two goals. Michelle Weber (Ilderton, ON) scored one early in the first half off a short corner and Kirsten Jewell (Toronto, ON) converted a penalty stroke in the second half to give the Mustangs a 2-0 win.
In their last game of the weekend, Western was looking for redemption against Waterloo as they lost a close game to them the weekend before in their home opener. Again, Western dominated most of the play, winning 2-1 and giving Waterloo limited offensive chances. Madeleine Wootton (Platsville, ON) and Elsbeth Tate (Richmond, BC) scored one goal each for the Mustangs.
The Mustangs are hoping to continue their winning streak this week as they play York once again on Friday evening at TD Waterhouse. The Mustangs are focussing on limiting York’s offensive opportunities and making sure they take advantage of all opportunities once they get inside the circle.
