Radford, Weber, Wootton score two each as Western beats Carleton 7-1

LONDON, Ont. - The Western Mustangs kicked off their regular season with three games at home Sept. 26-27, losing one game to Waterloo and beating Queen's and Carleton.

The Mustangs lost a tough game to Waterloo 1-0 in their frist match. Although they played hard and dominated most of the game, Waterloo had a lucky break resulting in a penalty stroke. Western was unable to put one away despite many chances and short corners.

In their second match of the day, Western bounced back hard defeating Queen's 4-0. Again, Western dominated most of the play and gave Queen's limited chances to score. Michelle Weber (Ilderton, Ont.) scored two goals while Jennifer Bruce (Kitchener, Ont.) and Kirsten Jewell (Toronto) added one goal each.

On Sunday morning, Sept. 27,  in their last match of the weekend, the Mustangs defeated Carleton 7-1. After a slow start with Carleton scoring first, Western came back hard, scoring a pair of goals immediately after the Ravens goal. The Mustangs carried that momentum for the rest of the game scoring five more goals and limiting Carleton's offensive chances. Louise Radford (Guelph, Ont.),  Weber (Ilderton, Ont.) and Madeleine Wootton (Platsville, Ont.) scored two goals each, while Megan Scraper (West Vancouver, B.C.) added one goal at the end of the game.

"The team played well this weekend, and we are progressing in the right direction as a team," said head coach Jeff Pacheco.  " If we keep our heads down, work hard and do the little things right, good things will come."

Next weekend, Western travels to Queen's to play Toronto, Waterloo and York. The Mustangs are looking to come out hard against Toronto, the defending 2008 OUA Champion - it is anticipated to be a very close match.
