KINGSTON - The Western women's field hockey team fell to UofT 4-0 on Oct. 16 and earned two clutch wins against McGill (2-1) and Queens (3-1) on Sunday, Oct. 17.
The Mustangs started their first game with vigor, but were unable to contain the Blues, conceding one goal off a penalty corner and three during open play.
Head Coach Jeff Pacheco does not attribute the loss to UofT's superior play, however, but rather to Western's lack thereof: "[i]f we don't play well, it really doesn't matter who we're playing; we happened to be playing the second seed," Pacheco said.
"Our approach has to be for us to get better and improve all the time."
And improve they did, as the girls went on to defeat both McGill and Queens the next day.
McGill crumbled first under the captain-lead offense, with Madeleine Wootton (Plattsville, Ont.) opening the scoring with a powerful wrist shot from five yards out.
McGill retaliated with a goal of their own, but co-captain Megan Scraper (West Vancouver, BC) put the game away with a shot from the top of the D after receiving a perfect set up courtesy of Elsbeth Tate (Richmond, BC).
In the second win of the day it was Scraper who opened up the scoring, firing a shot through the Queens keeper's five-hole. The Gaels managed to slip an equalizer past Western keeper Julia DiGravio (Waterloo, Ont.), but failed to match the go-ahead goal by Western's rookie forward Alexandra Nelson (Erin, Ont.).
It was Katelynn Roganowicz (Burlington, Ont.) who secured the win for the purple by cleaning up a juicy rebound left by the Queens defense, making the end score 3-1 in favour of Western.
The Mustangs will end their league play with a final game versus Waterloo, in Waterloo, on October 23.
