GUELPH, Ont. - The Western Mustangs travelled to Guelph this weekend and suffered two difficult losses on Saturday Oct. 2 before responding with a win on Sunday, Oct. 3. On Saturday the Mustangs fell to York 3-2 in the morning and lost 3-1 to McGill that afternoon. However, Western came back with a solid effort to defeat Carleton 11-2 on Sunday. All three games were played in Guelph, Ont.
In the game against the York Lions it was the Lions who held the advantage for most of the game before Allie Nelson tied the game at two with a highlight reel goal with five minutes remaining. The Mustangs were not able to hold off the Lions attack and they scored the winner with two minutes left.
McGill came out and pressured Western with a relentless attack in the second game on Saturday and scored first, holding on to the lead for the majority of the game. The youthful Mustangs could not put together much of a fight in this game and lost 3-1 earning no points in the standings on the day.
After the disappointing day of action on Saturday the Mustangs would respond on Sunday with a tremendous all around game beating the Carleton Ravens 11-2. The Mustangs scored eight unanswered goals in the rout. It was a solid team effort that was lacking in the previous two games. Megan Scraper had a hat trick for the Mustangs setting up many opportunities for Western as well.
Head coach Jeff Pacheco felt his team squandered an opportunity here to move up the standings in the OUA.
"In the loss against York, it was the first time we showed our lack of experience on the field," Pacheco stated. "Again in the loss to McGill our youth showed, as we felt we wasted a day not getting any positive results."
Coach Pacheco was pleased with the result against Carleton and will look to take those positives into a difficult weekend ahead.
"We had a solid team effort, ball possession, shots on goal and tape to tape passing were the main ingredients for this win," Pacheco said. "We have a massive Saturday ahead that we will gear up for this week."
The Mustangs will travel to Waterloo on Oct. 9 to take on the No. 1 Guelph Gryphons at 11:45 a.m. and later that afternoon will look for revenge against the York Lions at 4:30 p.m.
