OUA West Final is a go for Mustangs

Feb. 27: OUA West Semifinal - Western 84 Lakehead 58

LONDON, Ont. - The Western Mustangs women’s basketball team proved why they had a second-place finish overall this season posting a 84-58 win over Lakehead at Alumni Hall Feb. 27 in the OUA West Semifinal.

Western will now advance to the OUA West Final on March 3, with their opponent still to be determined tonight between Windsor and Brock.

The Mustangs played a strong first half holding the lead with a score of 41-30. Katelyn Leddy (London, Ont.) and Rebecca Moss (Waterloo, Ont.) combined for 22 of Western’s 41 points. After falling behind 33-23, Lakehead’s head coach Jon Kreiner called a time out to allow his team to regroup. Still, Western continued to lead on the scoreboard going into the second half.

Lakehead continued to struggle in the second half with Western at one point taking the lead by 20 points. With the score 73-41 after the third quarter the Thunderwolves were held to no baskets until four minutes into the fourth quarter.

Leddy led the Mustangs charge with 17 points on the game along with Beckie Williams (London, Ont.) who contributed 14 points.

Western will now face the Windsor Lancers in the OUA West Final on Wednesday March 3 in Windsor at the St. Denis Centre at 7 p.m.

The No. 2 nationally ranked Lancers defeated Brock 73-65 on Feb. 27 in the other OUA West semifinal. 

The winner of the March 3 OUA West Final will advance to play in the OUA Finals against the OUA East champion Ottawa Gee-Gees on Saturday March 6 at 3 p.m., with both division champions also advancing to the CIS Nationals hosted by McMaster University in Hamilton, Ont., March 12-14.
