Women's Volleyball Year in Review

Bronze medal winners at the OUA championships

LONDON, Ont. – An Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Bronze medal capped off a stellar season for the Western Mustangs Women’s Volleyball team.

The team finished with 28 points, recording a 14-5 record to land second in the OUA West. The Mustangs took the Bronze medal in the Final Four championships in Hamilton, Ont. when they defeated the Queen’s Gaels in straight sets (25-16, 25-13, 25-22). The team had fell to the eventual OUA Champion, Toronto Varsity Blues, in the semi-finals.

Though there was no OUA championship won, the season had a lot of high points for individuals and for the team itself. The Mustangs reeled of eight wins in their final nine games before they entered the Final Four tournament, much due to the fact that the team four players who were honoured for their outstanding play this season.

Claire Morrow (London, Ont.) won the West Libero of the year award. She led the OUA in digs per game with 4.62 as well as overall digs, with 291. Her stellar season also landed her on the OUA All-Rookie team, the lone Mustang to get the nod this season.

Making an appearance on the OUA West all-star team from the Western Mustangs is Jenna Thomson(St. Mary’s, Ont.) the Kinesiology major had a stellar season and was an integral part to the Mustangs winning Bronze at the OUA Championships.

Two Mustangs also gained recognition as second-team OUA West all-stars this season. Right-side Sarah Lowry(Calgary) and left-side Caleigh Whitaker (Sharon, Ont.) each got that honour after strong individual seasons that helped lead to the team’s overall success.

With the taste of bronze, the team will be looking for more next season as they vie for OUA gold, and a shot at a CIS Championship.
