On Saturday September 24, the Western Mustangs will take their 3-0 season into Waterloo to face the Laurier Golden Hawks.
The Mustangs are coming off a win against the Ottawa Gee-Gees that saw them shift a team down in the CIS-ranks for the second week in a row (Western previously beat McMaster 48-21).
A lot of attention has been focused on the Mustangs high-powered offense, but it was the defense that held the fort against Ottawa in the first half, making time for the offense to get in gear. Fourth year Defensive End David Lee finished the game with 6 tackles, including two for a loss, and forced a key fumble late in the third quarter in Ottawa territory. Two plays later the Mustangs added another touchdown to make it 24-6 and the rout was on.
Offensive Lineman Matt Norman has been listed as the number 11 prospect for the 2012 CFL Canadian Draft (click here for more). Norman, a 6-foot3, 317-pound senior from Châteauguay, Que., anchors the powerful Mustangs offensive line, a major component of Western's CIS-leading rushing game.
After a slow start on Saturday against the Gee Gees, Rookie Tyler Varga scored two second half touchdowns to bring his season total to nine. Varga finished with 145 yards on the ground and added one catch for 9 yards.
The Mustangs next home game on October 1 at TD Waterhouse Stadium against the York Lions is Homecoming Weekend. Homecoming 2011 will be a memorable weekend packed with fun and celebrations. Every year, thousands of Western alumni return home to campus to reconnect with friends, tour around campus and take part in the many events over the weekend.
