Mustangs shut out Waterloo and defeat McGill to go undefeated on the weekend

This past Saturday and Sunday, the Western Mustangs field hockey team travelled to York University for their second-last weekend of league play for a pair of games against the Waterloo Warriors and McGill Martlets.

On Saturday, the Mustangs sought revenge against the Warriors for a loss earlier in the season. Third-year forward Katelynn Roganowicz put the Mustangs on the scoreboard early in the first half off of a series of passes following a short corner. Neither team was able to find the net in the remainder of the half, sending the Mustangs to the break with a 1-0 lead.

The second half was again a defensive battle, however Jessica Crawford potted the lone goal of the second half to give the Mustangs a 2-0 victory. Along with the two goals solid defence by veterans Karly Bryson and Katie Feagan in the backfield and fantastic goalkeeping from Bethan Blackburn secured the shut out for Western.

On Sunday, the Mustangs played the McGill Martlets for the second time this season, defeating them 3-0 on the season’s opening weekend in September. Third-year defender Megan Duffy got the Mustangs offence started with a well-placed shot off a short corner at the 19-minute mark. A series of quick releases from forwards Roganowicz and Crawford at the 31st and 33rd minute marks put the Mustangs up 3-0 at half.

The Mustangs dominated the second half, with great ball possession and distribution from second-year midfield Jennifer Chisnall and first-year midfield Leah Burke. Crawford and third-year Lauren Mackenzie both found the back of the net in the second half to make the final 5-1 in favour of the Mustangs.

Western head coach Joe Cendrowski felt the two wins were crucial saying: “earning six points and conceding only one goal this weekend was vital for us heading into OUAs in two weeks time. Individual performances were good and it was a great confidence booster for us heading into our last weekend of play.”

The team is finishing off the regular season in Kingston next week with three games. They open the weekend against the University of Toronto on Saturday, and then face host Queen’s and the University of Guelph on Sunday.
