Mustangs drop to Ridgebacks on home turf

Today the Mustangs played against the UOIT Ridgebacks and lost 1-0.

At two minutes scorin’ Lauren Winquist took a shot and Ridgebacks keeper Melissa Linton dove for the ball. Linton was just able to extend her fingertips for the save and these antics prevailed throughout the game, a match that Western was favoured to win.

At 17 minutes UOIT’s Sara Voisin scored the first goal of the game. She was sent on a great run with an impeccable ball into the Western defensive zone and had ample time to shoot. Voisin shot high, just beyond the grasp of Western goalie Tori Edgar.

Mustang Hayley Slavin managed to fire a shot off at 33 minutes, but it was a tad left.

Slavin played an increasingly important role in the buildup of most plays on net and this made her a target for the Ridgebacks who victimized her 25 yards from the net.

There was great teamwork and consequent build up between Chloe Klaus, Madison Seymour, and Adrianna Guiffre. They managed to get a shot on net that was knocked out of bounds by Ridgeback keeper Linton.

The first half ended 1-0 for the UOIT Ridgebacks.

At 49 minutes the Mustangs’ Lauren Winquist assisted Jenna Schroeder in a shot on keeper Linton, however, she played incredibly well and managed to keep the Mustangs tame with a shutout.

A lot of the Westerns second string players dressed today and Meghan Glibbery played for the second game in a row staying on her toes, eager to prove.

A Western coach could be heard across the field saying “pull the trigger," meaning take a shot, discontent with Mustangs’ performance based on their impressive season record so far.

At 70 minutes Western player Madison Seymour received a red card for elbowing a UOIT player in the ribs during a corner set up. At 71 minutes, Western player Madison Glibbery also received a yellow card.

Being one player short Western really turned up the heat with attempt after attempt on net.

There were audible prayers in the audience and Lauren Winquist's (aka scorin’ Lauren) family shouted words of encouragement.

Today’s game was an upset for the Mustangs and their fans. The team has a chance to come back in their game at Laurier on October 13th at 1pm.
