Weekend Preview: Women's basketball team aims for back-to-back wins

The Western Mustangs women’s basketball team plays its final game of the fall semester five hours down the 401 highway in Kingston as they take on the Gaels of Queen’s University. The Stangs are coming off an eight point victory over the Ryerson Rams at Alumni Hall, and now face a Queen’s team who sits in third place in the OUA East with a .500 record. The Mustangs currently third in the OUA West with eight points at four wins and 3 losses, and with a win this weekend the team will share second place with the undefeated Brock Badgers as they head into the winter break.

Liz Boag leads the Gaels’ offense, currently averaging 13.7 point per game – standing 11th in the OUA. The junior 5’3 guard from Kingston is scoring at a high proficiency draining 42% of her field goal attempts. The Mustangs will have to limit Boag inside the paint if they look to grab another victory. On the glass Sydney Kernahan has been dominant for the Tri Colour team, ranking fourth in the conference with 8.8 rebounds per game.  The Gaels senior from Calgary has provided Queen’s with many second chance scoring opportunities the purple and white will have to be wary of come Saturday.

Western, led by second year coach Brian Cheng, has started to find its groove approaching the month of December. Dundas native Jenny Vaughan and Brights Grove native Laura Dally are both Division I transfers and the duo has been able to lead a group of talented young players to a third place seed. Vaughan, second in the OUA with 19.0 points per game, plus Dally – who nets 12.8 points per game –have also assisted the likes of Annabel Hancock who netted 16 points in their last victory over the Ryerson Rams.  In its own end of the court, Western will look to their dynamic duo of Vaughn and Dally to limit the Gael scorers and aim to head into the exam season riding a two-game winning streak.

Game time is 6:00pm Saturday evening in Kingston. The game will be live streamed on SSN Canada’s website.
