Mustangs blank Badgers to move to 2-1

The Western Mustangs Women’s Rugby team was on the road Saturday, taking on the Brock Badgers and looking to rebound after a loss to Queen’s last weekend. Utilizing a balanced attack, the Mustangs came away with a 35-0 shut out victory.

The Badgers came out strong in the first half and kept the Mustangs on their heels.  The Stangs struggled early on to maintain possession and sustain multi-phased attacks. It took until the late stages of the first half before either team found their scoring touch, as Arielle Dubissette-Borrice started the Mustang attack from inside the team’s 22-metre line.  With support form her teammates and ball movement, the ball went through five Mustangs before ending up back in Dubissette-Borrice’s hands to finish off the 70 metre run with a score directly under the uprights. Meaghann Buitinga converted the try to bring the score to 7-0 for the Mustangs to end the half.

The Mustangs stormed out of the gate in the second half, as Andrea Bowra scored a try only three minutes into the half and Buitinga hit her second of what would be five converts, to make it 14-0 for Western.

Unwilling to rest on their lead the Mustangs kept up the pressure on Brock as Lori Josephson scored a try just two minutes later to give Western a comfortable lead.

This rapid fire scoring would repeat itself later in the day, as Dubissette-Borrice recorded her second try of the game in the 71st minute before Josephson scored a try at the 73rd minute, also her second of the day.

Buitinga’s five converts gives her 12 on the season, the most in the OUA, and moves her into fourth in OUA scoring, directly behind Joesphson.

The Mustangs are back in action on September 22 when they head on the road to take on the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m.
