After the Mustangs extended their winning streak to seven consecutive games two weeks ago by downing the Windsor Lancers 51-23 there is now only one team that stands between Western and an undefeated regular season: the York Lions. The Lions will travel to TD Stadium this Saturday to face the Mustangs in the last week of the OUA regular season.
The Mustangs will be heading into the game rested and refreshed after a bye week over the Thanksgiving holiday. The sophomore duo of quarterback Will Finch and running back Yannick Harou lead the Mustangs offence against Windsor as Finch completed 22 of 34 passes for 362 yards and both a rushing and passing touchdown. Harou led the Mustangs ground game as he rushed for 110 yards on 15 carries with two touchdowns to contribute to the win. On the other side of the ball, Simon Bahru and Sean Blake lead the Mustangs defence against the Lancers as Bahru scored on a 54-yard interception return, while Blake came up just one yard short of the end zone on a 74-yard return.
Perhaps the biggest highlight in the Mustangs win over the Lancers was kicker Lirim Hajrullahu becoming Western's all-time leading scorer, breaking Frank Jagas' record of 392 career points. With two minutes left in the first half Hajrullahu nailed a 33-yard field goal to raise his career points to 395 and establish himself as Western's all-time leading scorer. The kick was the senior's 70th career field goal, which also established him as the Mustangs all-time leader in field goals.

Now sitting at 402 career points the St. Catharines native is in position to break Neil Lumsden's all-time CIS record of 410 career points in the final regular season game of his CIS career.

The York Lions will be heading to London for Saturday's match-up after falling to their hometown rivals, the Toronto Varsity Blues, in a 56-35 defeat last week, dropping the Lions record to 2-5 on the season. Wide receiver William Austin led the Lions offence against the Blues, posting one touchdown while also racking up 128 yards on eight receptions. Defensive end Josh Small led the Lions defence throughout the game with five tackles and one assist. Quarterback Myles Gibbon leads the Lions offence, not only serving as the team's top passer with 1,531 yards and 10 touchdowns this season, but he's also second on the team in rushing with 451 yards on 70 attempts with two touchdowns.
Saturday's matchup is pivotal to the playoff picture as a win by the Mustangs will lock up first place for the purple and white and secure Western home field advantage throughout the playoffs. The Mustangs can finish no lower than second place and a loss by Western and a win by Guelph will see the Gryphons take first place with an 8-0 record.
Game time is set for 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 19, and fans can watch the action live on Rogers TV London, online via Mustangs TV, or listen on CHRW or CJBK with Tom McConnell and legendary Mustangs coach Larry Haylor calling all the action.
