LONDON, Ont. – The Western field hockey team had another successful weekend as they hosted the last two games of OUA action. The Mustangs played a double header on Sunday against Waterloo and McGill, winning both games securing the third place seed going into playoffs next weekend.
Â
For the second time this season, the Mustangs defeated the Waterloo Warriors 3-2. Western started the game with a lot of ball control and movement, having many successful transitions between defence. Earning her sixth goal this season,
Megan Duffy buried the ball to the back of Waterloo's net off a direct shot on a short corner.Â
Â
The second half brought more action and excitement. With just under two minutes in, Waterloo's Melissa Lewis scored a goal to tie the game up. However, Western replied with two quick goals within a minute taking the lead back off of short corners from
Karly Bryson and
Katelynn Roganowicz were off of short corners.
Â
With 20 minutes left in the game, Waterloo pulled their goalie hoping to get back up on the scoreboard, while the Warriors played very good defence, disallowing any shots on net by Western. With approximately eight minutes left in the game, Waterloo earned themselves a short corner, which Stephanie Snyder was able to capitalize on, however that would be the final goal of the game, giving Western a 3-2 victory.
Â
In their second game of the day the Mustangs took on McGill, picking up a dominant 5-2 win in the final regular season contest for both teams. Once again the Mustangs opened the scoring with Duffy, Roganowicz, and Safia Mohammed each scoring a goal within a five minute span while McGill was not able to get on the scoreboard until the second half.
Â
Duffy received her second goal of the game and eighth of this season, once again off of a short corner to put the Mustangs up 4-0. The next goal was received by McGill's Aliza Rana off of one of their six short corners in the second half. However, Western responded within minutes as
Nicole Borges found the back of the net, recording her first goal as a Mustang. A breakaway goal from Sarah Main cut the Mustangs lead, making the final score 5-2 for Western.
Â
Western's Head coach Jeff Pacheco commented that he is glad to see the team playing well the whole day and finding the back of the net. He added, "Lots of players stepped up, it was great to see Karly Bryson score her first goal as a Mustang off of that short corner.Â
Â
"We did a lot of little things right today and that is why we got the results we did," said Pacheco. "Going forward we need to know that every game is a must win."
Â
The Mustangs now get set for the OUA Championships taking place this weekend at York University.
