Western defeats Saint Mary's to advance to the OUA Semi-Finals

The Western Mustangs field hockey team posted an impressive 6-2 victory over the Saint Mary's Huskies on Friday afternoon, earning a berth in the semi-finals of the OUA Field Hockey Championships.

In the second game of the day, the Mustangs and the Atlantic University Sport Champion Huskies were tied 2-2 at the half but Western blew the game open in the second with four unanswered goals for the win, advancing to the OUA semi-finals for the seventh straight season. Fourth-year forward Katelynn Roganowicz scored three goals, the first in the 28th minute and two back-to-back in the 47th and 49th minutes to put the game away. Her final marker came on a penalty stroke.

The Huskies took the early lead in the contest on a goal by Brittany Avery just four minutes in, but the Mustangs tied it 13 minutes later off the stick of Megan Duffy and took their first lead on Roganowicz's first 11 minutes after that.

Saint Mary's tied the game again in the 30th minute on a goal by Paige Johnson, but that was all the offence the Huskies could muster.

Next up for the Mustangs are the second seeded Guelph Gryphons at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.
