The top two teams in Ontario university football, the Western Mustangs and the Queen's Gaels, will take the field this weekend to determine which team will be the 106
th Yates Cup Champion this Saturday at Western's TD Stadium. Although both teams have seen each other before this season, the stakes are much higher for Saturday's game as the CIS No. 1 Mustangs battle the No. 4 Gaels to determine who will be crowned the top team in Ontario and continue their quest for the 2013 Vanier Cup.
With a perfect 8-0 season proudly tucked under their belts, the Mustangs began their 2013 playoff campaign with an impressive 32-3 victory over the McMaster Marauders in their Semi-Final matchup last Saturday.
Game after game the Mustangs have proven that they are a force to be reckoned with, and last Saturday's Semi-Final was no exception. CIS all-time scoring leader Lirim Hajrullahu continued to leave intercollegiate football fans in awe as he racked up yet another feat in the CIS and OUA record books, posting six field goals to tie the record for most field goals in a single playoff game. In the first half of Saturday's contest Hajrullahu led the Mustangs on the scoreboard, scoring five field goals to give the Mustangs a 15-0 advantage after the first two quarters.
On the defensive side of the ball the Mustangs posed a strong threat to the opposing Marauders with Mustangs cornerback Simon Bahru and linebacker Beau Landry tallying six tackles each.
Matt Uren led the purple and white offence on Saturday as he returned the ball for 138 yards and consistently put the team in good field position throughout the action, while Yannick Harou secured two touchdowns in the victory.
The Gaels also had an impressive 2013 regular season as they finished second in the OUA with a record of 7-1 and their only loss coming from the Mustangs when the purple and white downed the Gaels 50-31 in front of Western's Homecoming crowd in late September.
The Gaels advanced to Saturday's championship after defeating the Guelph Gryphons 34-17 in playoff action last weekend. Fifth-year running back Ryan Granberg collected 88 all-purpose yards in the first quarter for the Gaels and racked up two touchdowns, 113 yards on the ground and 27 receiving yards. Queen's then tallied 21 unanswered points to shut the Gryphons out in the second half. The Gaels' performance in their Semi-Final game proved that they are a well-rounded team with talent in all areas of the field and will be fiercely looking for redemption against the Mustangs.
Although Western has posted a win against Queen's earlier this season, the Gaels have faced the Mustangs in a Yates Cup Final in the recent past and claimed the trophy. In 2009, the Gaels and the Mustangs went head-to-head on Queen's home turf in Kingston for the Cup, and the Gaels hoisted the trophy proudly after defeating the Mustangs 43-39.
The stakes are high heading into this year's Cup, as both teams will battle for a place in the Mitchell Bowl against the winner of the Canada West conference to then advance to compete the coveted Vanier Cup.
Game time is set for 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 9, at Western's TD Stadium. Fans can watch the action live on Sportsnet 360, or listen on CHRW or CJBK with Tom McConnell and legendary coach Larry Haylor calling all the action.
