Weekend Preview: Western hosts Queen's and York on home opening weekend

The Mustangs continue OUA women's basketball action this week as they host Queen's on Friday in their regular season home-opener before returning to Alumni Hall to host York on Sunday.

Coming off of a decisive 71-51 win over Carleton last week, the Mustangs will be looking to improve their 1-1 record with two more wins as they head into this weekend's games. The Mustangs have been a strong shooting squad so far this season and sit in fourth in the OUA for field goals at 42.1% as a team, as well as shooting 33.9% from outside the arc for a fifth place spot in the OUA standings.

After two regulation games this season, Western guard Jenny Vaughan leads both the province and the Mustangs in scoring as she has averaged 23 points per game on the season to take the top spot on the OUA leaderboard. Adding to the Western offence are Kelsey Wright with 11.5 points per game and Melissa Rondinelli with 10.5 points per game.

Queen's Gaels: Friday, November 8 – 6:00 p.m. – Watch Live on Mustangs TV

The Queen's Gaels are undefeated after two games this season, posting a tight 58-52 win over Lakehead and a 61-55 win over Guelph to take the top spot in the OUA East division standings. The Gaels have proven themselves to be a dominant presence in the paint with an OUA-leading 49.5 rebounds per game while holding their opponents to an average of 31.5% in field goals made/attempted.

Leading the Gaels is fourth-year forward Gemma Bullard with a 48% field goal percentage and an average of 13 points per game. Guard Liz Boag is next with 9.5 points per game and a team-high three-point percentage of 30%.

The action is scheduled to start on Friday, November 8 at 6:00 p.m. at Western's Alumni Hall.

York Lions: Sunday, November 10 – 1:00 p.m. – Watch Live on Mustangs TV

The York Lions are 1-1 after two games this season, posting a 54-45 defeat over Guelph before suffering a 53-39 loss to Lakehead last week. The Lions have struggled with turnovers this season, averaging 13.5 per game, and will be looking to keep the ball out of Mustangs hands heading into Sunday's matchup.

The Lions are led by fifth-year guards Kayla Pangos and Nadia Qahwash who each recorded an average of 11 points per game with Pangos also shooting 40% on field goals to lead York's starters in terms of field goal percentage.

Game time is set for 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 10 at Alumni Hall.
