Mustangs sweep OUA Squash Championships for third straight year

Day Three Recap

HAMILTON, Ont. - For the third consecutive year the Western Mustangs squash teams have swept the OUA Championships, taking both the men's and women's titles on Sunday afternoon. It's the third straight title for the women's team and 13th in school history, more than any other OUA institution. For the men's squad this year's title was their 30th in a row, and 40th overall, far surpassing any other team in Ontario.

While the men's squad clinched their title yesterday the women's team entered the day in first place, holding a single point lead over their opponent for Sunday, the Queen's Gaels. With a gold medal potentially on the line the two teams faced off in a highly competitive matchup with the Mustangs taking a 4-2 victory. With the win the Mustangs pulled clinched first place, eventually winning by only a single point over the Waterloo Warriors, while Queen's took the bronze.

Despite securing the championship trophy the day before the Mustangs men's team didn't let up in their final match of the tournament, sweeping Queen's 6-0. Overall the men dropped only one game the entire weekend, finishing up at 29-1 over their five matches. The host McMaster Marauders took the silver medals on their home court, while Waterloo claimed bronze.

Along with the team championships, the Mustangs picked up individual honours as well, with Holly Delavigne and Brian Hong named to their respective OUA All-Star Teams, while Hong was also named OUA MVP.

Day Two Recap

HAMILTON, Ont. - It's often been said that the hardest thing in sports isn't winning a championship, it's defending it.

Tell that to the Western Mustangs men's squash team.

For the 30th consecutive season the Mustangs are able to call themselves the OUA Champions, clinching the title with a pair of 6-0 victories over the McMaster Marauders and Brock Badgers today in Hamilton. Although the Mustangs still have a match to play against Queen's tomorrow afternoon no other team will be able to match the 23 points Western has accumulated so far, meaning that the team will capture another OUA banner on Sunday.

On the women's side of the draw the Mustangs are currently in first place and are in position to bring home their third straight OUA Championship on Sunday. Western won both of their matches on Saturday, taking down McMaster 5-1 and Brock by a 6-0 score. The Mustangs enter the final day of competition holding only a one point edge over Queen's, their opponent for Sunday, meaning tomorrow's head-to-head matchup may end up deciding the OUA Championship.

Day One Recap

HAMILTON, Ont. – Entering the year as defending champions the Western Mustangs men’s and women’s squash teams headed down the road to Hamilton on Friday looking to extend their reign as OUA Squash Champions.

The Mustangs got the tournament started on Friday afternoon, taking on the Toronto Varsity Blues.  Both the men’s and women’s Mustangs squads came out on the winning side, with each side claiming an identical 5-1 victory.

After a few hours off Western returned to the court later in the evening to face the Waterloo Warriors. On the women’s side the Mustangs and Warriors played in one of the closest team matches of the day, with both sides winning three games to end the match in a 3-3 draw, the second of the day for Waterloo.

Despite not going game for game like on the women’s side, the matchup between the two men’s teams was not lacking in excitement as Brian Hong and Cameron Seth played in a marathon four set classic. In fact the match went so long it forced the David Braley Athletic Centre to be remain open for a full hour longer than scheduled before Hong was able to pick up the win, and help Western to take the match 6-0.

The two Mustangs squads return to the court tomorrow with a pair of matches between the host McMaster Marauders and Brock Badgers. Play then wraps up on Sunday with a match against the Queen’s Gaels.
