Day Two Recap

EDMONTON - Day two of the CIS Track and Field Championships was a strong one for the Western Mustangs with the team picking up five medals on the second day of competition, as the team added to their point total on both the men's and women's overall leaderboard.

The Mustangs men's team took sole possession of fifth place, ending the day with 31 points, while the women's team moves up to fifth with 30.25 points after two days.

Easily one of the day's highlights of Friday’s action was the men's 60m hurdles that saw both Matt Brisson and Izzy Ogieva take their place upon the podium, with Brisson claiming gold in 7.87 seconds while Ogieva finished in 8.04. It’s the fourth consecutive year Brisson has medaled in the 60m hurdles as he brought home a silver from last year’s CIS Championships, gold in 2011, and bronze in 2010.

Taylor Stewart continued his record-breaking season jumping 7.87m to take the gold medal in the men's long jump event. The 7.87m jump establishes a new Western record, breaking the mark that Taylor set earlier this season.

Robin Bone also had another strong performance in her first season with the Mustangs, claiming the silver medal in the pole vault with a vault of 3.85m tying with Rebecca Marchant of Trinity Western for second place.

Brenna Thomson captured the Mustangs fifth and final medal of the day, running a time of 38.56 to pick up the bronze medal. Thompson’s time of 38.56 breaks her own Western record and she becomes the first Western women’s team member to ever run the 300m in less than 39 seconds.

Other Mustangs results included Emma Tallman taking seventh in the women’s 1000m (2:54.63), Payam Saboni finishing 11th in the men’s high jump (1.85m), Caroline Ehrhardt in sixth in the women’s long jump (5.78m), Lydia Foley also taking sixth in the women’s shot put (12.59m), and the women’s 4x800m relay team coming in fifth (9:09.61).

The third and final day of the CIS Championships gets underway tomorrow afternoon beginning with the women’s triple jump. Fans can tune in live at cis-sic.tv to watch all the action.

Note – Western originally finished first in the men’s 4x800m relay, but that was later changed to a disqualification
