The undefeated Western Mustangs will hit the road this weekend to face off with the Wilfred Laurier Golden Hawks at University Stadium on Saturday, September 21.
Western enters Saturday's game with momentum on their side having won all four of their contests this season. So far in 2013 the Mustangs have scored at least 50 points in each of their victories and are coming off of a dominant 83-27 victory over Ottawa in what was the second highest scoring game in OUA history. Quarterback Will Finch continues to rank among the country's top passers throwing for 1,461 yards and 13 touchdowns while completing 74.4% of his passes to lead the Mustangs offence. At the forefront of the Mustangs ground attack is running back Garret Sanvido who once again leads the CIS in rushing yards, racking up 471 yards on only 57 attempts and adding five touchdowns.
Heading into Saturday's action, the Golden Hawks will be looking for redemption after the Mustangs defeated the Hawks 56-3 last season with Finch and receiver Brian Marshall connecting four on four touchdown passes to lead the Mustangs offence and produce a lopsided Western victory. Finch and Marshall's chemistry on the field is still tangible this season, with six of Marshall's seven touchdown receptions coming via the second-year quarterback.
Leading the Golden Hawks will be a familiar face to the Western faithful as legendary Mustangs quarterback Michael Faulds now wears a different shade of purple as Laurier's head coach. In his first season at the helm the Golden Hawks boast a 1-4 record with close losses to Guelph, Toronto, and York along with a big 41-10 win over crosstown rival Waterloo. Laurier will be in tough against a powerful Mustangs squad, however if anyone knows the ins and outs of Western's systems it's the team's former star QB.
Laurier running back Dilon Campbell led the team's offence against Waterloo, pressing the Warrior's defensive line and generating 180 yards rushing and two touchdowns for the Golden Hawks, setting a new personal best for rushing yards in a single game. Despite losing the first three games of the OUA season against Guelph, Toronto and York, the Golden Hawks will be looking to put up continue the momentum from their first win as they prepare for Saturday's game.
Game time is set for 1:00 p.m. at University Stadium in Waterloo. Fans can listen to all the action live on 94.9 CHRW Radio or on NewsTalk 1290 CJBK with Tom McConnell and legendary Mustangs coach Larry Haylor calling all the action.
