Mustangs fall in hard-fought matches against York and Toronto

GUELPH, Ont. – The Mustangs' field hockey team traveled to Guelph University this past weekend, suffering two difficult losses to the York Lions and Toronto Varsity Blues.

Western's first match of the weekend on Saturday morning saw a tough 4-1 loss to the Lions. The Mustang squad came out with high momentum in the first half managing to outplay the Lions. The Stangs quickly took the lead as senior Katelynn Roganowicz scored the first goal of the game on an offensive short corner.

The purple and white continued to pressure the Lions, while holding a full field press with great communication travelling up the field in the second half. Despite their greatest efforts, the Mustangs couldn't hold on to the lead, surrendering four straight goals to drop their first match of the day.

In the second game of the weekend, Western met with the Varsity Blues with Toronto coming out on top 6-0. Western held off Toronto for the first half with solid defensive play, allowing just two goals to sneak past. Western matched the Varsity Blues intensity, shutting them down a number of times and protecting the goal. However, the Blues managed to produce four unanswered goals in the second half.

The Mustangs will wrap up their final weekend of OUA play against the Queen Gaels at 9 a.m. Saturday, October 19 and the Guelph Gryphon's at 2:15 p.m. at University of Toronto. Similar to the preseason invitational tournament hosted by the Varsity Blues, this final weekend will be played on the newly constructed world-class water-based pitches for the 2015 Pan Am and Parapan Am Games.
