ST. CATHARINES, Ont. – Three tries from
Andrea Bowra helped lead the Western Mustangs women's rugby team to a commanding 49-0 win over the Brock Badgers on Saturday afternoon.
The win moves the CIS No. 10 Mustangs to 1-1 on the season while the Badgers fall to 0-2 on the year.
Bowra led the purple and white offence on Saturday, recording 15 points, while 2013 Shiels Division Rookie of the Year
Breanne Nicholas followed close behind with 14 points off of two tries and two conversions. Veteran
Mackenzie Fane scored two tries for 10 total points, while senior
Kimmi Kuiper and rookie
Nikki Case each added a try of their own.
The Mustangs didn't waste any time putting points on the board as Bowra earned her first try of the day only seven minutes into the game, which was followed up by a try from Nicholas only five minutes later. At the 22 minute mark Bowra struck again with her second try, while Kuiper added another marker at 25 minutes. Fane rounded out the scoring in the first half with a try at 32 minutes, converted by Nicholas, and again at the 38 minute mark to send the Mustangs into the half with a 32-0 lead.Â
It was more of the same in the second half, with Case scoring only four minutes into the half, followed by a conversion by Nicholas to put Western up 39-0. Bowra and Nicholas recorded the final points of the day with each scoring a try at the 52 and 62 minute marks to give Western a 49-0 win.
Next up for the Mustangs is their final home game of the regular season on Saturday, September 20, against the Laurier Golden Hawks as part of Western's Homecoming Weekend. Last year the Mustangs closed out the regular season with a 63-10 win over the Golden Hawks and will be looking for similar success in front of the Homecoming crowd next weekend. Game time is set for 3 p.m. on Alumni Field.
