Two ties keep Mustangs hope of OUA berth alive

LONDON, Ont. - After two days and 210 minutes of play over the weekend, the Mustangs' field hockey team walked away with two points, losing to Queen's on Saturday morning before tying McGill and Waterloo on Saturday afternoon and Sunday, respectively.

Western's first match of the day on Saturday saw the Mustangs fall to the Queen's Gaels 1-0. The Mustangs came out strong, shutting down any chance the Gaels had offensively right away with a full field press. The purple and white created many of their own opportunities offensively with short corners and shots on net but the first half would end scoreless. Western's goalie Shanshan Tian made multiple game-saving stops, including a nail biting stop on a penalty stroke. Queen's Kelly Briana scored the only goal of the game just ten minutes into the second half, giving the Gaels the win.

In the second game of the day, Western played the McGill Martlets to a 1-1 draw. Western took the lead in the second half with a pass across the goal from Katelynn Roganowicz to Lindsay Borrell, who sunk it in the back right corner of the net to earn her first career goal as a Mustang. McGill would tie the game in the second half and had a chance to take the lead on a penalty stroke but Tian made a game saving to help Western earn their second point of the season.

The Mustangs' third and final game of the weekend saw the Mustangs tie the Waterloo Warriors in the teams' third meeting of the year. Hungry for revenge, the Mustangs battled for 70 minutes against the Warriors, who were able to match their momentum. Western continued to have extremely efficient communication from all over the field while playing great defense. Mustang goalie Bethan Blackburn shut down any chances the Warriors had, resulting in a long and hard scoreless match.

The Purple and White's next game is at 10 a.m. on Saturday, October 4, 2014 against the York Lions at Guelph University. On Sunday October 5, the Mustangs face off against long time rivals Toronto Varsity Blues at 4 p.m. That game will also take place at Guelph on Varsity Field.
