Mustangs men take silver, women win bronze at OUA Championships

Day Three Recap

TORONTO – Both the Western Mustangs men's and women's tennis teams brought home hardware from the OUA Tennis Championship hosted by York University, with the men's team claiming silver while the women's team won bronze.

The Toronto Varsity Blues won the title on the men's side, and Montreal earned the top spot on the women's.

Western faced off with the Varsity Blues in the men's final with Toronto taking a 5-2 win. Both of the Mustangs points came in singles competition as Vahagn Tonakanian defeated Ivan Markovic (6-2, 6-3), and Brent Moffatt won his contest with Cameron Chiang (6-4, 7-5).

Toronto's win marked the end of Western's three-year championship run as the Mustangs had won the OUA crown from 2012-14.

The Mustangs and Varsity Blues also squared off on the women's side of the event, with Western taking the bronze medal with a dominant 6-1 win.

Western swept all three doubles matches with  the teams of Helen He and Maja Dragovic, Aurthi Muthukumara and Melissa Lee, and Chantal Forristal and Chloe Duggal all winning their matches by scores of 8-1, 8-0, and 8-1 respectively.

In singles competition He, Lee, Muthukumara, and Dragovic experienced the same success as in the doubles event, and they were joined by Julia Kobylianski who was also victorious.

Day One Recap

TORONTO – Both of Western's tennis teams earned victories on Day One of the OUA Tennis Championships at York University, as the women's team defeated McMaster 6-1 early in the day before the top-ranked men beat Carleton 7-0 at night.

With the wins, the women's team is set to face Montreal on day two while the men's team prepares to face the Waterloo Warriors in their second matchup of the weekend.

On the men's side, Western won all three of its doubles matchups while losing just three games in the process. Vahagn Tonakanian and Kurtis Alexandre both put up clean sheets in their singles matchups, as all six of Western's players put up dominant performances.
